Bulging is a warning sign, not a complete diagnosis. Possible causes include excessive ripple-current heating, high ambient or internal temperature, overvoltage, reverse voltage, abnormal charging, inadequate cooling, unsuitable ESR, mechanical stress, incorrect mounting or operation beyond the intended endurance conditions.
A failed component should be handled safely and the equipment de-energized before inspection. Do not simply replace a capacitor with the same voltage and capacitance without checking ripple current, frequency, temperature, ESR or impedance, dimensions, terminal style and the surrounding circuit condition.
