Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors for Industrial Drives and VFDs

Selection guidance for aluminum electrolytic capacitors used in industrial motor drives and variable-frequency drive DC-link stages.

Drive DC-Link Selection

Evaluate repeated load cycles and enclosure heat

Motor drives and VFDs expose the DC-link to load changes, switching ripple and thermal cycling. Capacitor selection should follow the actual bus voltage, transient margin, ripple-current spectrum, cooling path, enclosure temperature and mounting constraints.

DC-link requirements

Define bus voltage, capacitance, ripple current, ESR and transient conditions across the intended duty cycle.

Thermal design

Account for ambient and hotspot temperature, airflow, heatsinks and neighboring power components.

Mechanical fit

Confirm case dimensions, terminals, mounting, vibration exposure and required endurance.
